BeReal which was sold last year to Voodoo for about $540M1, markets itself as the simplest social media platform. With mainstream social media platforms encouraging individuals to post the highlights of their lives, BeReal wants to change that. Other networks including Instagram have duplicated their success. How does BeReal work?

The BeReal app is simple. It gives users a notification once a day to “Be Real.” The user then takes a photo on the BeReal app using the front and back camera to show their followers what they are doing at that moment. No filters, no editing, and just realness is the message that BeReal is trying to push.

How Often Do You Share an Image on BeReal?

The BeReal app sends users a notification once a day. The notification could come at any time, which is what makes the app unique.

Is BeReal Private?

Each BeReal that a user posts is only shared with their friends2. However, it is possible to publicly share a BeReal on the Discovery timeline.

Who Invented BeReal?

BeReal was invented by Alexis Barreyat and Kevin Perreau3 in France.

When Did BeReal App come out?

The BeReal app was launched by Barreyat and Perreau on December 21st, 2019.4

Who Owns the BeReal App?

The BeReal app was acquired by French mobile apps and games publisher Voodoo in June of 2024.1

How Much Money Has the BeReal App Raised?

The app raised $60 million in series B5 in early 2022, bringing the app’s valuation to $587 million. The app previously raised $30 million in Series A in June of 2021, led by Andreessen Horowitz, Accel, and DST. Accel partner Sonali De Rycker and a16z Andrew Chen6 (who is on the board of Clubhouse and Substack) joined BeReal’s board as well.

However, without a sustainable business income–at the time, the platform did not charge users nor feature ads–BeReal’s owners had to sell the app in 2024 to Voodoo for 500 million euros.1

How does BeReal make money?

Prior to the owners of the app selling BeReal to an outside company, the only money BeReal had made was through investments. As of July 2024, BeReal’s new owner Voodoo introduced in-app advertisements as a way to generate sustainable income.1

As of March 2025, BeReal does not require any subscriptions or in-app purchases.

How Many People Have Installed BeReal?

As of March 2025, BeReal has been installed over 115 million times worldwide.7 This is a significant increase from August 2022, when it had around 28 million downloads,8 July 2022, when it had been downloaded 20 million times,9 and even more so since April 2022, when it had only been downloaded 7.67 million times.10

However, the app’s growth has slowed significantly in recent years. In 2024, BeReal ranked as the 16th-most downloaded social app, earning over 10 million downloads for the year, an impressive statistic, but a much-decreased growth rate compared to the 12+ million downloads received in just 4 months (April-August) in 2022.11

How many active users does BeReal App have?

BeReal’s app currently, in March 2025, has 16 million monthly active users, a sharp decrease from the 25+ million daily active users the app had in early 20247.

What countries is BeReal in?

BeReal is currently available in most European countries, as well as the United States.

The app is listed as inactive in: Uzbekistan, Sri Lanka, Nigeria, Madagascar, Libya, Kazakhstan, China, Afghanistan, Belarus, Iraq, and Bermuda.12

The app has language options in Dutch, English, French, German, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish, Simplified Chinese, and Turkish.12

How Do I Change the BeReal Notification Time?

If you’re looking for a little more control over the BeReal notification time, then this probably isn’t the app for you. As the developers state, “Push notifications” are delivered globally on a random basis at different times each day. “You cannot” change the time yourself. You’ll simply have to, you know, be real in the moment.

How Do I Add Friends?

When you open the app, click on the icon of two human figures on the left side. You’ll then see three options: “suggestions,” “friends,” and “requests.” Click “suggestions.” You will then get a list of profiles who are already friends with your friends, and you can add them by tapping “Add” next to their profile and name.

Can Companies Advertise on BeReal?

In July 2024, in-app advertisements were introduced to the Be Real app.1

When did BeReal reach #1 on the App Store?

On Monday, July 25th, 2022, BeReal reached the #1 spot on the free app list in the iOS App Store for Apple’s iPhones. It remained there until September 14th, 2022, when it was overtaken by the “Top Widgets” app after iOS 16 rolled out.13

How Much is Each User Worth to BeReal?

In the Spring of 2022, BeReal was valued at $600 million via their series B.14 Based on the number of users at the time, that means that each daily active user on the BeReal platform was worth around $100.

In July of 2024, BeReal was sold for $547 million1, with 40 million daily active users15, bringing the total value of each user down to $13.67. Compared to other similar apps, BeReal has one of the lowest market value per user ratios, compared to an impressive $133.59 for Reddit, $38.58 for similar app Snapchat, and $73.68 for popular photo board app Pinterest16.

Since the acquisition, BeReal’s monthly active users have dropped to 16 million at the end of 20247.

How Much is BeReal Worth?

BeReal was acquired by French company Voodoo for 500 million euros ($547,025,000 USD at the time) in July of 2024.1

In 2022, BeReal was valued at $600 million via their series B, which was a round led by DST Global.17 Previously, in 2021, they’d been valued at $150 million post-money from their Series A, led by Andrew Chen of Andreessen Horowitz. This followed a seed round via Kima Ventures and New Wave.6
