What Is Edits, and How Do I Use Edits?: a Guide to Meta’s New Video Editing App

Well, it’s no secret that Meta and TikTok have been in fierce competition lately. And with TikTok’s future continuing to be uncertain, creators and brands are considering other platforms for short-form video content. Creators are constantly looking at any new video creation tools they can find, so Meta decided to provide a video editing and creation app of its own: Edits.

Our team has created and will keep updating this guide throughout the week to help you understand the answers to your burning questions: what is Edits? and how do I use Edits?

What is Edits app?

The Edits app is a new video creation and editing app from Meta.

How do I download Edits app?

The Edits app is available globally for download for free in the App Store and Google Play Store. To use the Edits app, download the app and sign in with your Instagram account.

Do I need to have Instagram to use Edits?

Yes, the Edits app requires you to login to Instagram to set up an Edits account.

How do I use Edits app?

Edits is intuitive to use for people familiar with Instagram, the app’s partner app. The Edits app, like Instagram, offers users ways to save ideas they find interesting, see Reels others have created, and create their own video projects. The main difference between Instagram and Edits is that Edits gives users a dedicated tab for Video Projects that they can save, come back to later, and edit in more detail than they could in the native Instagram video editor. The new Edits app also conveniently offers users a way to keep track of their Instagram account insights.

When was the Edits app released?

Meta’s new Edits app was released on April 22, 2025.

What’s the biggest difference between Capcut and Edits?

Since they’re both owned by Meta, Edits integrates more seamlessly with Instagram than Capcut does. Edits brings users’ Instagram insights front and center in their video editing app, allowing users to create videos and analyze their reach in one platform.

CapCut, for now, offers a wider variety of editing tools, templates, and it is not tailored to any specific video platform.

How is Edits better than Capcut for Creators?

Meta is proud that the Edits app was made alongside creators, and their feedback was incorporated throughout the app’s development. Meta states that they will continue to take creator feedback and insight into account as they develop and update the Edits app.

Here are some quotes from creators who Meta collaborated with in the creation of the Edits app:

“It’s mindblowing!” “The quality is impressive.” “I am surprised and happy to see that (feature).”

What are the tabs on the Edits app? What features are offered in Edits?

  • The first tab on the left of the Edits app is the Stickies section, where users can save ideas when inspiration strikes.
  • The next tab to the right is the Inspiration tab, where you can scroll through Reels that are optimized to your Instagram account’s interests (for me, as you saw above, it’s birds and books).
  • The center tab of the Edits app, with the 4 squares, is where your video projects are housed.
  • The tab with the record symbol is where you can record videos in the app.
  • The last tab in the Edits app is where you can see insights on your Instagram account, including likes, reach, and reel views.

What features does Edits have?

The new video creation app from Meta, Edits aims to empower creators with all of their video creation needs in one app. The features in Edits are designed to allow creators to create, edit, and analyze the effectiveness of their videos.

Edits App Features We Expect to See in the Future:

Meta says that they are working on adding more features to the Edits app, including:

  • Keyframes: Edits app users will be able to pinpoint exact moments to easily adjust a video’s timing, motion, and effects.
  • Creativity: Expect to see more fonts available soon, text animations, video transitions, effects for voice recordings, more options for music (including royalty-free music) and video filters, and more AI tools to modify and enhance videos.
  • Collaboration: Edits app users will be able to share project drafts with friends, other creators, and brands to create videos together.

App Store Rankings

Edits has surpassed rival CapCut in the app stores for both iPhone and Android devices. Edits has risen to #1 in the Google Play store in the Video Players & Editors category. In the Apple App Store, Edits is also the #1 free app in the Photo & Video category.

Overall, Edits is currently the 3rd most downloaded free app in the Apple App Store, and is ranking #11 overall in the Google Play Store, as of Friday, April 25, 2025.

Do people like the Edits app?

As of April 25, 2025, Edits has received a combined 20,000+ reviews on the Apple App and Google Play stores, and is ranked higher than 4 stars on both app stores. In the Apple App Store, Edits has received over 1,000 reviews, and is currently ranked 4.5 out of 5 stars. In the Google Play Store, Edits is ranked 4.4 out of 5 stars with over 15,000 reviews.

Still wondering how to use Edits?

So, you ask, what is Edits? It’s a new app video creators can use that integrates seamlessly with Instagram, convenient for users who favor that platform. It’s also a work in progress, with Meta releasing the app over a week before their initial April 30 release date, and with more features promised to be coming soon. We’re excited to see how the new Edits app from Meta continues to grow and develop as time goes on.
