Reddit Business Verification: How It Works and When It’s Worth Doing

Reddit has been quietly building out its business toolkit for a couple of years now, and the latest addition is one I’ve had several clients ask about: the grey verified checkmark.

When Reddit first started testing verified profiles in December 2025, it was a small, curated group—mostly accounts that already carried the old “official” badge. There was no way to request it.

That changed on July 9, 2026, when Reddit expanded verification to public beta for businesses and organizations. Eligible businesses using Reddit Pro can now apply through a self-serve process in their account settings, no waitlist required. (Verification for individuals is still in alpha testing, so if you’re hoping to verify your personal account, you’ll be waiting a while longer.)

Our team has managed Reddit presences for brands for years, and we’ve taken several accounts through this process already. So I want to share exactly how it works, what you’ll need on hand, and, just as importantly, when I’d tell a business not to bother.

What the Grey Checkmark Actually Does

Let’s set expectations before we get to the how-to, because I think this is where a lot of coverage of Reddit verification gets it wrong.

Verification confirms identity. That’s it. Reddit is explicit that it doesn’t affect moderation rules, feed ranking, ad performance, or access to product features. Your posts won’t rank higher. Your ads won’t perform better. The checkmark doesn’t even appear on ads.

What it does is tell a Redditor that the account posting is genuinely the company it claims to be. That matters more than it sounds like it does, on a platform where brand impersonation is common and where users are trained to be suspicious.

A few more things to keep in mind:

  • Verification is free. If anyone offers to sell you a Reddit verification, they aren’t affiliated with Reddit.
  • Verified accounts still follow the same rules as everyone else. A self-serving post from a verified account can still be removed by a moderator. A comment from a verified account can still get downvoted into oblivion. The badge authenticates who’s speaking; the community still decides what it thinks of what you’ve said.
  • Verify your brand’s account, not employee accounts—even if they’re representing your brand on Reddit. This is the single most common mix-up I see. The verification is tied to the business, and your display name has to match your business name, so it belongs on the account that directly represents the company itself rather than a particular employee at the company.

What to Gather Before You Start

The application itself takes about 10 minutes—but only if you have all your information and documentation ready to go. Make sure you have these 3 things first:

  1. Your country of business incorporation. This is where the business is legally incorporated, which isn’t necessarily where it operates.
  2. Your EIN (Employer Identification Number). Non-US entities without an EIN will use an Other National Identification Number instead.
  3. An official business document showing both your business name and business address. Keep reading for a full list of accepted documents, though in most cases a W-9 is probably the easiest.

How to Verify Your Business on Reddit, Step by Step

  1. Find the verification option in your settings. If you don’t see it, confirm the account is signed up for Reddit Pro—it’s free, and it’s a prerequisite for eligibility.
  2. Start the application.
  3. Confirm your details. Reddit will ask you to verify your username, account email, display name, and country of business incorporation. As I mentioned earlier, the display name must match your business name.
  4. Verify with Persona. Reddit has partnered with Persona to collect and verify business information on its behalf. Reddit doesn’t store this information on its own servers, and Persona deletes it after 30 days.
  5. Enter your organization details. Choose Employer Identification Number if you’re a U.S. business. Other National Identification Number is for non-U.S. entities that don’t have an EIN.
  6. Submit your documentation. Persona sorts accepted documents into three categories:
  • Corporate and Formation Documents, which includes Articles of Incorporation, Articles of Organization, Articles of Formation, Certificate of Formation, Certificate of Organization, Business Registration Certificate, Certificate of Good Standing, Statement of Information, Certificate of Reinstatement, Annual Reports, Trust Agreement, Business License, Fictitious Business Name/DBA, Invoice, Letter of Authorization, or Independent Third Party AML Assessment.
  • Tax Documents, which includes Form W-9, Form W-8 ECI, Form W-8-BEN-E, IRS 147C Letter, IRS CP-575, IRS CP-565, SS-4 Form, or IRS 501(c)(3) Determination Letter.
  • Supporting Documents, which includes Business Bank Statement, Utility Bill, or Commercial Lease Agreement.

Whatever you choose has to show your business name and business address. Upload it as a file, by taking a photo, or through another device.

  1. Wait for the decision. Reddit will email you when the review is complete. Most businesses hear back quickly, though applications that need additional review can take several days.

One practical tip I recommend: set yourself a follow-up reminder. As of now, the confirmation screen gives no ETA, and the notification goes to whatever inbox owns the Reddit account email—which, for a lot of brand accounts, may not be an inbox anyone checks daily. I’ve seen approvals sit unnoticed for over a week. Of course, you’ll also see it on your Reddit account yourself if you check there.

If your application can’t be verified right away, Reddit may ask you to provide more information or resubmit. And if you ever want the checkmark removed, you can email [email protected].

When Reddit Verification Is Worth It

I’d recommend verifying your business’s Reddit account if any of the following describe your situation:

  • You already post or comment on Reddit. If your brand account is answering questions, participating in relevant subreddits, or running a community of its own on Reddit, verification makes that participation more attributable and authoritative. This is the strongest use case by far, in my opinion.
  • You get impersonated on Reddit. Some categories attract fake accounts—finance, crypto, gaming, ticketing, anything with a customer support function that scammers can imitate. The checkmark is a cheap defense and way to help your audience spot the real account.
  • You make announcements on Reddit. Product launches, AMAs, responses to news about your company—these are exactly the moments Reddit built the verified feature for, and they’re moments when credibility is paramount.
  • You handle support or crisis response on Reddit. When you’re posting a correction or an apology, “Is this actually them?” is a question you don’t want readers asking.

When I’d Tell You to Skip It (At Least for Now)

Truth be told, I don’t think every brand needs to rush out to get a verified Reddit account. Here’s a few situations where it may not be necessary:

  • You have no Reddit presence. A verified badge on a dormant account doesn’t communicate anything. It’s a credential attached to a history that doesn’t exist yet. Build the participation first; verification will still be there once you do.
  • You’re expecting a visibility lift. To be clear once again, verification will not help you rank, and it will not help your ads. Reddit says so directly. If the pitch to your leadership is “verification will improve our search visibility,” you’re setting everyone up for disappointment.
  • Your Reddit strategy is highly self-promotional. Verification makes your promotional behavior more obvious, not less. If your plan is to drop links in subreddits and hope nobody notices, a checkmark next to your name is working against you—not that you stand a great chance of getting away with it either way.
  • You aren’t eligible yet. Accounts need to be in good standing with no Reddit Rules violations, can’t be marked NSFW or primarily active in NSFW communities, and need a display name matching the business name.

What Matters Most for Winning on Reddit

Verification is nice, but it’s far from the most important thing you can be doing on Reddit today.

Reddit threads surface constantly in AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, and Perplexity. If you’re paying attention to generative engine optimization—and Google now gives you dedicated Search Console reporting on your visibility in its AI features—what people say about your brand on Reddit is a real input into how AI systems describe you. That’s a genuinely important reason to care about the platform in 2026.

But verification isn’t what matters here. Participation is, and participation that is accepted by the communities on Reddit. Answering questions well, showing up in the subreddits where your customers already are, and building enough of a track record that people recognize your name—those are what change how your brand gets discussed and summarized. Reddit Pro’s mention tracking is a good place to start, since it’ll show you where you’re already coming up. Our complete guide to organic Reddit marketing walks through plenty more strategies and advice if you’re interested.

Verification is just the finishing touch on that work. It’s a good one, it takes ten minutes, and it costs nothing. Just don’t mistake it for the work itself.
